About DMARC

When attempting to send an email campaign, Direct Mail may present you with a warning similar to the following:

"The email policy for yahoo.com limits which mail servers can send email on behalf of user@yahoo.com. Using this From Email address may cause your email to be blocked or bounced by some servers"

So, what's this all about?

Some companies use a technology called DMARC to safeguard their domain names. DMARC policies tell other email servers on the internet who is allowed to send email with a particular "From Email" address. Let's take Yahoo for example. Yahoo requires that any email sent from a yahoo.com email address must have been sent from a trusted Yahoo server. When a server receives an email that says it’s from yahoo.com, it can check if the server that sent it is on Yahoo's approved list. If it is not on the list, then the email may be bounced, blocked, discarded, or sent to spam.

These policies are aimed at preventing fraudulent email, but they can also impact mailing lists and email service providers that send "on behalf" of other domain names. If you are using a "From Email" address that is protected by a DMARC policy, your email campaigns may experience deliverability issues.

The solution

If you are using a free email service (like AOL, Gmail, iCloud, Outlook, or Yahoo), the solution is to simply use a different "From Email" address for your email campaigns. The best solution is to use an email address from a domain that you own and control—like joe@abc-company.com. You can purchase your own domain names from providers like GoDaddy, Namecheap, and others.

If you are already using your own domain and are still seeing these warnings, don't worry! You (or your IT person) can add Direct Mail’s email servers to your company's list of trusted email servers. Just take a look at this help article for information on how to set it up.
